The WRaPT team carried out the following:

• Met with clinical leads to map relevant operational elements of clinical services and understand key issues impacting pathway redesign
• Identified, aggregated and visualised clinically analysed data
• Assessed the current model of care
• Reviewed the surgical service to improve patient flow from STU to the wards
• Assessed how new models of care and workforce could assist delivery of care across the surgical directorate

The WRaPT team and tool were able to benefit the service review in several ways. The team:

• Facilitated new ways of working by linking shift patterns to activity
• Demonstrated how to improve patient flow by increasing senior decision makers during identified peak times
• Created an evidence-base for new clinical pathways based on the operational reality across the hospital
• Streamlined care pathways based on reducing transfers of care and improving the utilisation of outpatient pathways
• Demonstrated improved efficiency and potential cost saving from reduced length of stay and locum spend by using new non-medical roles and standardising practice

The models produced by the WRaPT tool were presented to the board with a view to implement the changes as soon as possible.
